Puh ! Auch endlich geschafft. – Hier also nun ein kleiner Ausflug nach Kroatien, wo wir mit hochmotivierter Besatzung (abgesehen von kleinen Ausrutschern, wie Kaffee als Sundowner) einen aufregenden aber auch sehr entspannenden Toern erlebten.
Mit ungebremster sportlicher Begeisterung und mit hochmotiviertem Skipper am Ruder blies uns der Yugo mit bis zu 50kn Wind in die naechste Bucht. Dort bei knapp 30 Grad – der lange ersehnte Augenblick: der Eichwal !

Sieht aus wie ein gutes, altes Gewicht fuer die Kuechenwaage. Ein kleiner, handlicher Brocken mit der Form eines ueberdimensionalen Cupcakes, aber dem Gewicht einer kleinen Packung Milch. Naja. Der Geruch ist eigentlich nicht schlecht. Richt fast wie ‘Brot’ ! Krasse Kruste. Ich brech mal ein Stueck ab und stosse im Inneren auf eine Kuchenartige Masse mit der Konsistenz eines feuchten Sandkuchens. Der Geschmack… Nah. Jetezt hoer’ ich lieber auf und benuetze das Ding als Briefbeschwerer. Besser selber machen. Definitiv !
Und nun finde ich auch endlich Zeit, mal ein paar Fotos raufzuladen. Alls erstes mal die Geburt und dann noch ein paar erste Fotos nach der Ankunft zu hause.
Uns vieren geht’s gut. Bruno ist NICHT eiferesuechtig, sondern ganz lieb zu seiner kleinen Schwester. Ansonsten macht Viola derzeit nicht viel. Hauptsaechlich sorgt sie dafuer, dass wir nicht zu viel schlafen. Und wenn sie dann doch genug genuckelt hat und friedlich einschlaeft, wacht natuerlich Bruno auf. Hehehehe. Na das wird lustig.
Nebenbei: die LosLocos sind nun seit gigantischen ZWEI JAHREN verheiratet. Oooh yeaaah !
…die Arbeit haben einen schoenen Tag der Arbeit wuenschen. Heute koennt ihr zu hause bleiben und den Herrentag begiessen.

Our daughter Viola Lila was born today at 13:55 after extremely intensive but short labor. She’s 53cm big and weights 3.33k. And she’s a real beauty (pics coming…)
Heute um 13:55 wurde unsere Tochter Viola Lila geborten. Die Geburt war intensiv, aber recht schnell (~1h20′). Der Mutter geht’s gut und dem Vater auch. :-) Bilder von der kleinen huebschen kommen. Aber nicht mehr heute !
Nach langer Suche hab ich ihn auf Ebay gefunden und auch gleich zugeschlagen. – Der Epson DX-100 daisy wheel printer ist ein Stueck Computer-Geschichte aus den 80er Jahren. Im Gegensatz zu den Nachfolgenden Nadeldruckern, ist dieser Typ von Schreibmaschinen inspiriert und druckt die Zeichen mit Hilfe eines Typenrades auf’s Papier. Wunderbar anzusehen (und hoeren). Auch die Druckgeschwindigkeit mit 13 Zeichen pro Sekunde ist genial – zum Mitlesen. Hehehehe.

Noch ein paar Details zum Drucker: Verwendet werden offensichtlich Brother-kompatiblle Typenraeder. Mein Exemplar wurde mit ‘Letter Gothic 12′ geliefert. Derzeit bin ich auf der Suche nach einem Typenrad, das den vollen ASCII-Zeichensatz unterstuetzt. Leider wurden beim deutschen Letter-Gothic einige Sonderzeichen (@, | {}, []…) den (fuer mich) ueberfluessigen Umlauten geopfert.

Wie man auf den Fotos 15032008241.jpg – 15032008245.jpg erkennen kann, war der Gummi, der fuer den Anschlalg des Hammers verantwortlich war, defekt. Dieser wurde durch einen Raddiergummi + daruebergestuelpten Schrumpfschlauch ersetzt. :-D
Nun druckt er wieder !
Gleich dazubestellt: Endlospapier in A4 mit schoenen weiss/gruenen Streifen und durchnummerierten Zeilen. Yay !

Bruno liebt Essen, Musik, Tanzen, Leute, Buecher, Baeume…. Nur eines scheint Ihne besonders anzuziehen: Dinge mit Tasten drauf ! Im speziellen betrifft das Handys, Fernbedienungen und natuerlich Computer. So ist es auch nicht ungewoehnlcih, dass er schon seit laengerem stolzer Besitzer eines Toshiba Libretto ist.Mit entsetzen musste ich feststellen, wie weit seine (wohl vaeterliche) Vorbelastung nun schon gereift ist. Nach dem die Batterien seines tollen Lern-Kaefers schon seit Tagen leer waren, beschloss Bruno die3 Sache se3lbst in die Hand zu nehmen und schnappt sich, so wie’s der Papa auch macht, einen Schraubendreher und macht sich daran, den KAefer wieder auf Vordermann zu bringen. Dass wir dann natuerlich gleich mal neue Batterien rein haben, versteht sich von selbst. Nur… Erste Reparaturversuche mit 17 Monaten ?? Ist das nicht etwas frueh ?Guck:
Fuer alle die’s noch nicht wissen: Bruno steht auf Ur-Oma’s Hollermarmelade und auch auf Milchschaum. Leteres gerade, weil man so schoen die Haende reinstecken kann und danach den Tisch bemalen. Naja. Zumindest den Teil, der dann noch nicht voll mit Marmelade ist. Auf jeden Fall ziemlich erstaunlich, wie er nicht nur aus dem mini-Haeferl, sonder auch aus der Schuessel trinkt ! Haben sie bitte Spass: Â
Friday night I got the new controls (buttons, joysticks, etc.) for my Arcade cabinet. And just in time – thanks to the really nice owner of arcadeshop.de !!
I didn’t yet build the new wood panel for the control panel, so I used some old piece of art(1), I found in our cellar and tried my first layout of joysticks and buttons to give it a little testrun. The panel doesn’t really fit right – as I cut it in quite a hurry, but it made the first really cold weekend a nice one. And playing with two joysticks can be quite some fun (Tala and Gui would agree, I guess).
1) I can’t find a picture of it right now, but it had a huge white ’6′ painted on it. People from Berlin will now what I mean…
After a weekend of working on (and mostly in) my new and shiny (actually old and still pretty dirty) Zaccaria cab, I finally played some first games on the prototype setup.The PC components running Linux and AdvanceMame are installed and the arcade monitor was (for the time !) replaced by an old Iiyama CRT. I removed most of the inner parts and disassembled the control panel. The new parts – mostly buttons annd two new joysticks still haven’t arrived yet. But tomorrow, I think, I will start with the layout, while Gui finishes the restoration and new arrangement of the grafics on the control panel.Some pics from my weekend experience:
After searching for sooo long and a final waiting period of a seemingly endless week, today my arcade cab got delivered. It’s quite dirty and I didn’t even have time to try and start it yet. I’ll post another update in the evening or tomorrow with more details.

First it was Novell, Xandros and Linspire. Now TurboLinux also signed a contract with Microsoft. Not sure what Microsoft or it’s ‘partners’ are up to yet, but I’d rather stay away from those distributions for now…
After searching the Intarweb for nearly two months I finally decided to buy an old Zaccaria cab. The plan is to put in two new joysticks and lots of buttons, a cheap pc system that can boot off an usb stick, and maybe an iPaq. I’m gonna order the parts right now and hopefully I can start working on the project next weekend. Yay !! Cold winter nights, I’m happily waiting for you !

Oh, I don’t know, Apple products? Ableton products? Native Instruments products? Steinberg products? Propellorhead products? Corel products? Quartz? Colour matching built right into the drawing engine? A whole slew of audio, video, modeling, graphics, typesetting and printing (as in not your rgb inkjet) and media applications?

“Looks”. Heh. It’s never been about how the UI looks. The UI is more or less the same as it’s been since System 7. It’s about how the UI _works_, it’s about how the UI acts and feels, it’s about integration, simplicity and slickness. It’s about doing what it does and doing it responsively with a minimal resources. I’ll guarantee you that KDE won’t be nearly responsive on a 233 G3 w/ 192mb ran as Tiger was. Only people who don’t actually use Macs figure that it’s how the UI looks. (and I’ll concede, I think Enlightenment 17, and certain KDE setups are allot prettier, but neither works as NextStep did, and OS X does.) These are the same people who pitch compiz as the greatest thing since the colour monitor, sure it looks pretty, but it in no way boosts functionality, and all it exists for is to look pretty. And lets not forget the CLI, all the power under the hood of a full-out POSIX compliant BSD core, and weather or not you ever actually use the command shell is entirely a matter of preference and choice, and that’s how it *should* be.

Again, it’s fairly clear you’ve never actually used a Mac. Fink (apt for Darwin), and DarwinPorts offer the free software. What, you thought the POSIX compliant, BSD core was for show? Ad don’t forget all the wonderful non-free software availible for the platform. How’s that for choice, you get your pick from the best of both worlds.

SGI cases were prettier, but I digress. If all you’re doing is checking emails, word processing and some dev work, Ubuntu is fine. But once you get to any level of _serious_ creative work, Macintosh is the only viable option left with the demise of Irix. And let’s not forget the bit about everything working with minimal hassle on the Mac. Ever tried using a graphics tablet as your core pointer in Ubuntu? Or using a KAOS pad? Or just about any higher end, vaguely exotic multimedia hardware, for that matter? Yeah, I didn’t think so.
Just as an FWI, I’ve used various Unices for the past 15 years (Irix, Solaris, AIX, Free/Open BSD, Interix, Linux, and Darwin/OSX) Linux for close to 10. But there’s this way of thinking tat doesn’t seem to be too common these days, “using the best tool for the job”. Linux has it’s uses, serious creative work isn’t one of them. It may be good enough for what YOU do, but don’t assume that everyone else’s needs match your own. And for fuck’s sake, if you’re going to criticize something, use it first. You read like one of those pointless Linux distro reviews that bases the whole thing on the install sequence, then offers a generic gnome screenshot, and somehow thinks there’s anything even remotely useful in the article.
