Vor einer halben Stunden sind wir in die Anchorage von Palmeira auf Sal eingelaufen. Heute hatten wir guten Wind von fuenf bis sechs Beaufort und ab Mittag, entlang der Insel Sal hat der Wind nochmal voll aufgedreht und wir sind bei Windstaerke acht nur unter Fock die Insel entlang gelaufen. Auch hier am Ankerplatz haben wir eine steife Brise und der Windgenerator laeuft auf vollen Touren. Die Batterien werden in kuerze voll sein. Die Ueberfahrt von sieben Tagen war ein Traum, dennoch sind wir nun natuerlich muede. Jetzt gibt’s erst mal Essen und ein Bierchen und morgen werden wir mal einklarieren, Internet suchen und die Ankunft der Kira erwarten.

Just arrived at Palmeira, Sal – CAbo Verde. After a wonderful crossing of seven days. During the last day we had a constant force six wind and a fast ride, along the coast of Sal the wind increased towards force eight but we managed to glide along with only the jib and entered the anchorage of Palmeira about half an hour ago. Here in the anchorage the wind is blowing hard and our wind generator will fill up the batteries in no time. We will now have lunch and a bere and tomorrow we’ll gonna go to see the town, check in and look for some internet access.

Last night we sailed with the Blister until after breakfast and despite having very little wind, we still managed to sail 90 miles that previous day. In this moment we’re 85 miles off Sal, the island in the northeast extreme of Cabo Verde. We’re running 235 degrees with six knots (under Genoa and Jib) wo we should arrive tomorrow in the afternoon. Tim and Klaus on the Kira are about 80 miles farther out so they’ll probably arrive the next day. This should give us enough time to prepare a watermelon for their arrival. Plenty of dolphins showed, swarms of flying fish and lots of seabrds showed up today which made us try to catch some fish again. And guess what happened ? We lost our last bait fish !! Again the steel line that attaches to the fishing line was broken ! I think next time, we’ll use the anchor chain to drag our plugs through the water. Hehehe. This or maybe it’s just that the fish we’re catching is just too big. Yeah. That makes sense. – The tuna we ate for lunch came from cans… Besides that it was another beautiful and peaceful day with the kids playing Lego or reading (looking) books. We were lying around in the cockpit talking, reading or just waching the ocean. Unfortunately there’s continous cloudcover that stops us from charging our batteries with the solar panels. But right now the windgenerator is humming along to make sure we’re not running out of power. The nights are getting much warmer and the air is incredibly moist. Everything left outside is soaked an hour after sunset. The reason for that might be the water temperature that raised to a whopping 25.4 degrees. When we left the Canaries it was about 21. Right now I’m looking at the charts of Cabo Verde to see where we’ll be heading after we’ve picked up our friend in Sal. Probably, we’ll make a hop over to Sao Nicolao and Sao Vincente. But we’ll see… First we’ll have to arrive.

Hai in Siiiiicht !!! Und die Kamera nicht parat. Ja wie kann denn sowas passieren ?!? Auf jeden Fall war die crew ausser sich, als ploetzlich eine typisch dreieckige Finne aus dem Wasser ragte und unser Boot einmal umkreiste. Um beim Thema zu bleiben: vorhin haben wir einige sehr schoene Thunfische aus dem Wasser springen sehen und natuerlich haben wir sogleich unsere Angel ausgebracht (mit dem letzten Koederfisch dran !) Keine zehn Minuten spaeter erzaehle ich Tim von der Kira von den Thunfischen, da schallt’s aus dem Lautsprecher: ‘Jetzt ist bei uns einer dran – in diesem Augenblick !’ Na immerhin beissen die Fische bei unseren Freunden, wenn wir schon kein Anglerglueck haben. Und dann hab ich noch ganz was Sensationelles zu berichten: Wir hatten heute ein Segelmanoever !! Nach dem der Wind heute Nacht nochmal stark nachgelassen hatte und wir zum Fruehstueck nur noch mit ca. 3 Knoten unterwegs waren, haben wir entschlossen mal wieder den Blister zu setzen. Und dieser hat uns dann auch brav den ganzen Tag vorangebracht, obwohl wir teilwise nur zwei Windstaerken hatten. Bei derart wenig Wind zu segeln ist fast wie vor Anker liegen. Man kann sich bewegen, ohne festzuhalten, kein Geschaukel – alles super. Und dennoch kommen wir voran. Heute werden’s zwar wohl nicht mehr als 90 Meilen sein, aber immerhin. So wie’s aussieht, werden wir wohl noch zwei Tage unterwegs sein – kann uns nur recht sein, es ist echt wunderschoen hier. Das einzige was mich etwas nervt ist, dass beinahe das gesamte Obst und Gemuese inzwischen reif ist. Eigentlich hatten wir extra gruene Tomaten gekauft (und anderes frisches Zeugs), damit wir auch am Atlantik noch was haben. Zur Ze it sieht’s eher so aus, als ob wir alles auf den Kapverden verspeisen muessten, wenn’s nicht schlecht werden soll. Naja. Ach und ein Nachtrag zu Gestern (1.12.): Da gab’s natuerlich noch ein ganz anderes Highlight ! Und zwar kamen die Kinder bereits beim ersten Sonnenstrahl angerannt, weil sie wussten, dass es heute ein Geschenk gibt. Oma und Opa haben naemlich Adventkalender gebracht und diese wurden dann fruehmorgens ausgepackt. Und dann auch noch 100% den Geschmack getroffen: Lightning Mc Queen fuer Bruno und Hello Kitty fuer Viola. (War auch nicht so schwer, oder ?) So. Jetzt aber schluss mit der Tipperei. Ich muss Strom sparen. Heute war wieder der Himmel bedeckt und so konnten wir die Batterien nicht recht befuellen…

Was soll man denn erzaehlen ? Es passiert ja gar nix hier auf der Rancho Relaxo. Das Highlight des Tages war eine Eimerdusche mit Atlantikwasser, danach noch etwas Suesswasser aus der Solardusche. Fuenf Liter fuer vier Koepfe – mit Haarewaschen. Hehe. Wir sind total Oeko !! Und die Eiswuerfel im Campari-Orange (ja das gab’s heute !) die machen wir mit Solarstrom. Vooooll oeko ! Segeltechnisch tut sich auch gar nichts. Wir haben die Segelstellung seit zwei Tagen nicht geaendert und treiben locker mit 4-5 Knoten vor’m Wind dahin. Leider hat der Wind heute etwas nachgelassen, so haben wir kein so gutes Etmal wie Gestern – es waren im uebrigen nochmal genau 145 Seemeilen. Wir fahren halt recht gleichmaessig, nicht ? Heute werden’s wohl etwas ueber hundert werden. Immerhin. Zur Zeit laufen wir noch immer und mit Absicht etwas zu oestlich, aber angeblich soll ja auch irgendwann der Wind auf NE drehen, dann erreichen wir die Kapverden, ohne einmal die Leinen in die Hand genommen zu haben. Heh. Unsere Freunde von der Kira verzweifeln schon, weil wir sie so derart liegen lassen. – Hatte ich doch angekuendigt, Jungs ! Hehehehe. Ihr muesst einfach mal ein paar Biere wegtrinken, dann wird der Kahn auch wieder schneller. Bah, heut’ bin ich aber gemein, was ? Und nicht den Rundumblick vergessen, David: Gerade ist ein Kreuzfahrtsschiff mit 20 Knoten vorbeigerauscht, immerhin mit ca. 2sm Abstand. Ziel: Recife (Brasilien). Auch nicht schlecht. Aber krass unromantisch, mit dem Luxusdampfer ueber’n Ozean und zur Aequatortaufe ins Bordcasino oder so…. Und schon wieder haben wir heute Musik und ordinaeres Geschwaetz auf Kanal 16. Hoert denn das nie auf ? Es ist im uebrigen eindeutig der selbe Schwachkopf, den wir auch schon vor der Strasse von Gibraltar gehoert hatten. Aber immerhin besser bzw. unterhaltsamer als die DSC-Alarme der Kanarischen Kuestenwache.

At around five in the afternoon we’ve made half the way towards Cabo Verde which means it’s all downhill from here. As it seems, the second half will be a little slower; the wind decreased during the afternoon and right now at six in the morning, we’re gliding with a speed of four knots towards southsouthwest using jib and genoa. The ocean is quite calm and the slow motion of our boat feels very pleasant after all the rockin’ motion during the last two days. Yesterdays daily log again was exactly 145 miles Everyone aboard is feeling well and despite a minor crack in a kitchen board nothing onboard broke so far. The temperature of the ocean is 22,3 degrees and the air is getting warmer every day. After some chilly nights during the last weeks this is quite welcome and for once I can sit in the cockpit without fleeze jacket. We still had no luck fishing. Today another of our bait fishes was eaten. This time the steel line (!!) that’s attached to the bait broke. I don’t know how that could happen as this last part of the line should be multiple times stronger than the fising line itself. Bruno was quite angry loosing our big bait tish and said, he doesn’t want to fish anymore. But of course we’ll give it another try. Our batteries are down to 80% now as we had cloud cover during the whole day and not enough wind to charge by windgenerator. Speaking of: the air pressure fell from 1021 to 1015 during the last 24 hours – add this to the misty weather and you’ve got a nervous skipper. But the forecast doesn’t mention anything specaial.

And a question to our readers: Could someone please explain the luminousity of the ocean around us ? There seems to be two or three different types of animals that make the water glow around us: 1. very small particles that leave a long trail in the wake. 2. small pieces that glow very bright and for one or two seconds, looking like underwater light-bugs. 3. Big patches of light that flash up for an instant and are very bright, those have a diameter of a few centimeters upwards and one can see them up to 50 meters away from the ship. I should have brought an offline version of wikipedia with me – but somehow there wasn’t enough time for that. On the good side, this keeps me away from the computer and we can use the time on the ocean to make theories. Hehe.

Oh ! And to my surprise, we’ve got two flies onboard ! I have no idea how they managed to get that far out on sea but we’ll give them a ride to Cabo Vere.
